This weekend features one of fall’s biggest releases, The Social Network, written by The West Wing creator Aaron Sorkin, and directed by David Fincher as his follow-up to his Academy Award nominated film The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. The Social Network tells the story of the creation of Facebook and the man behind it, Mark Zuckerberg. To bring to life the story of one of this generation’s most popular inventions, Fincher has brought together a great cast of up and coming Hollywood. Before you go see the film that some critics are already calling the best film of the year, check out some of the previous films from its incredible young cast.

Jesse Eisenberg gained much acclaim last year with his roles in both Zombieland and Adventureland, yet his first film role in Roger Dodger is still one of his best. Eisenberg is Nick, a nerdy high school student who is worried over the fact that he has yet to lose his virginity. In an attempt to fix this, he goes on the town with his “ladies man” uncle Roger, played excellently by Campbell Scott. Roger takes his nephew around New York City trying to find someone to help Nick with his “predicament”. Eisenberg and Scott play perfectly against each other, one smooth as can be, the other like a high school version of Woody Allen. This great lesser-seen film showcases the best of Eisenberg so far.

Andrew Garfield, who is Eduardo Saverin, friend of Zuckerberg and co-creator of Facebook, has a very interesting career ahead of him. In the last year, he has co-starred with Heath Ledger in his last film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and in this month’s Never Let Me Go, in addition to being cast in the reboot of the Spider-Man franchise. But earlier this year, Garfield starred in a short film from Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze called I’m Here. Available at ImHereMovie.com, the film shows a world where humans and robots coexist. Garfield is a shy robot named Sheldon who meets the wild robot Francesca. Sheldon and Francesca start a relationship, but when Francesca starts falling apart, Sheldon helps put her back together. I’m Here is a phenomenal film that is a perfect illustration of those will give everything they can for the ones they love.

Rooney Mara, who plays Erica Albright, Zuckerberg’s ex-girlfriend, has gained much notoriety as of late. Mara will be playing the coveted role of Lisbeth Salander is the American film version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which will also be Fincher’s next film as well. But before her buzz in two Fincher films, Mara played a small role in Youth in Revolt, an overlooked film from earlier this year. In Youth in Revolt, Michael Cera is the awkward Nick Twisp, who after meeting the girl of his dreams, he creates a bad boy alter ego, named Francois Dillinger, in order to stay with her when the world gets in their way. Cera is great as Twisp, showcasing his talents in ways never seen before. Youth in Revolt seems like a typical shy guy meets beautiful girl story, yet the film breaks away from that convention to create a pleasantly effective love story.

Of course everyone knows Justin Timberlake from N*SYNC and for his affinity for bringing sexy back, but Timberlake has also become quite an interesting actor of late. His most interesting role was from Richard Kelly’s follow up to Donnie Darko, the even weirder Southland Tales. The film takes place at the end of the world, Los Angeles 2008. The film features The Rock as an action star with amnesia, Sarah Michelle Gellar as a pornstar who has written a screenplay that foresees the future and Seann William Scott as twin police officers, together they try to stop the end of the world. To describe anything else of the plot would just give away too much of the unusual nature that makes Southland Tales interesting, but Timberlake shows a much darker side and the film’s best performance as Private Pilot Abilene. In a film seemingly made of weird moments, Timberlake’s lip-synched performance of The Killers’ “All These Things That I’ve Done” is by far the film’s best. While not a great film, Southland Tales is so out there, it has to be seen to be believed.
